About US

Shearer's Bookshops were established in Gordon on the North Shore of Sydney in 1975. In the early eighties our specialist children's bookshop opened in a dedicated site just up from the Gordon station, giving those lovers of children's literature a place to visit and browse amongst a wide range of quality children's books.

We expanded the business opening shops in Cherrybrook and Leichhardt, which certainly kept us really busy. In 1993 Shearer's was the first independent bookshop to be awarded the Australian Bookseller of the Year.

In the late 90's we decided to consolidate our shops into Leichhardt under the Palace Cinema complex at 99 Norton St. With a shop that allowed us room to innovate we decided to add a coffee shop and Internet cafe. This grew the business and brought us many new customers, students, backpackers, retiree travellers and many movie lovers.

Barbara also developed a group of book clubs, who meet every month in the shop, to enjoy good company, great discussions on many different subjects, and to meet visiting authors, both new and famous.

Barbara also is a regular book reviewer on radio 2GB, on the Murray Wilton show on Saturday afternoons, one of the more popular literary programmes on Sydney radio.

Our range of books covers all areas of interest, in particular biographies, Australian fiction, sport, travel and children's books.

Our staff are enthusiastic and always do their best to ensure we satisfy our customer needs. We order directly from our suppliers locally and overseas, with quick order turnaround. We enjoy the challenge in tracking down that hard to find book for the discerning reader.
